Spied: 2014 Mercedes S-Class AMG

Sightings of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class have been increasing in frequency and we knew we’d catch an AMG version sooner or later. This particular tester isn’t sporting AMG’s signature quad exhaust tips, but our spy photographer assures us this is indeed Benz’s beefed-up flagship.

A few AMG hints include the rims, which appear to be lightweight, multi-spoke forged units, and the cross-drilled brake rotors. The requisite body kit is also missing, but should appear on the production version. Compared to previous testers, this one has shed a bit of camouflage. Up front we can see that the LED daytime running lamps will move from the lower bumper up to the headlight units. The front grille appears to be bigger, while the headlights have shrunk just a tad. The side is still a bit covered up, but it appears the next-gen S-Class may sport a revised trunk lid and triangular taillights.

It’s too soon to predict whether the S63 and S65 sedans will get new powertrains or carryovers, but the current S63 is powered by a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 (536 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque), while the S65 packs a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 rated at 621 hp and 738 lb-ft. Both cars send power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed and five-speed automatic, respectively.

Naturally, the S-Class will be loaded with tech. Among the rumored features expected for the new sedan is Magic Body Control (MBC), which will improve the ride by scanning the road and preparing the suspension for upcoming road imperfections. Expected launch date for the “normal” S-Class is sometime next year, while the AMG version should launch shortly after.
