Spied: 2013 Acura RLX

Acura’s new flagship sedan is set to arrive early next year, which means the automaker should be putting the finishing touches on the final production version. The 2013 Acura RLX was revealed at this year’s New York auto show, and our spy photographer recent caught this tester out on the streets. It wasn’t difficult to identify this large sedan once we saw shots of the front end, which reveal Acura’s distinct power plenum grille.

It also appears that the full LED headlights of the concept will make it to production, which is just one feature Acura’s flagship will have to distinguish itself from lesser models. The photos reveal a more conventional set of rims compared to the pinwheel-style wheels featured on the concept car. The side profile view also reveals hints of the concept car’s interesting character line that dramatically drops from the front fender to the front door. Also evident is the BMW-like Hofmeister kink at the rear quarter window. The back end is heavily camouflaged, but there’s a good chance the production version will look similar to the concept car, including the taillights with the fiber-optic accents.

Unlike the current RL, the RLX will be offered with two powertrains. First is a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system that combines a 3.5-liter, direct-injected V-6 and two electric motors at the rear wheels for a total output of 370 hp. The second is a simpler front-drive layout powered by a 310-hp engine. Inside, the RLX will be loaded with tech goodies, including two LCD screens – one used as a display and one touch screen to control audio, navigation, and climate controls.
