Spied: 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish

What It Is: The replacement for the Aston Martin DBS, which resurrects a badge used on the DBS’s immediate predecessor. This example was caught completely undisguised, but we previously captured a rougher-looking prototype during testing. We’ve also seen the Project AM310 concept Aston brought to this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy; that car was intended to preview this new Vanquish, and it did so rather accurately.

Why It Matters: The outgoing DBS has grown a bit long in the tooth, and when you’re paying close to $300,000 for a car, the last thing you want it to be is outdated. This new Vanquish, then, is working towards freshness with its new/recycled name and One-77–inspired styling cues.

Platform: Just like every other Aston Martin, the Vanquish will sit on the brand’s aluminum VH architecture. Cosmetically, the Vanquish breaks slightly from the DBS it replaces, and it gets One-77–like touches everywhere. The car’s curvy rear, the pointy strakes running through its doors, and its LED-laced headlights all trace back to Aston Martin’s recent limited-edition hypercar. Besides the grille—which features horizontal slats instead of an egg-crate design—the whole thing looks nearly identical to the AM310 concept.
